Minimum age
15 years (younger: Junior Open Water Diver from 10)
Swimming skills
A 200-metre swim without aids (or 300 metres with mask, snorkel and fins) and 10 minutes of treading water. No time limit.
Health
Medical questionnaire before the course; if any answer is yes, clearance from a diving medicine doctor.
Prior experience
None. This is the beginner course.

Don’t wait on land — dive too
The Open Water Diver is the world’s most popular diving course. With us it has an extra advantage: we schedule it to overlap with your child’s course. You head out together, you come back together, and in the evening you both have something to tell.
The structure is the same as the Junior Open Water Diver: five theory chapters, four open water dives. Afterwards you are allowed to dive independently to 18 metres anywhere in the world — and, even more important for families: you can accompany your own child as their buddy as soon as they have their junior certification.
For many parents, that is the real reason to take the course.

Common questions
From parents who are new to diving
On the contrary — a healthy respect is exactly the right attitude. We work with adults just as we do with children: calmly, until it feels normal. If a skill doesn’t work, we repeat it. There is no minimum speed.
Yes. PADI offers the theory online — if you work through it before your trip, you save about half a day to a full day on site. Let us know when booking and we will send you the access details.
As soon as your child has their junior certification and you have your Open Water Diver, you can dive as a buddy team — within your child’s depth limits (12 metres up to age 11, 18 metres from 12). With us, a guide always comes along to the reef anyway.
Then you get a referral form for the parts you have already completed and can finish the course at any PADI centre worldwide — including at home. It rarely happens, but it is always possible.
