Overview
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is a two-day programme that lets certified Open Water divers try new diving activities under supervision, in a structured and well-organised setting. It is the natural next step, and for most divers the one that makes the biggest difference.
The programme has two core dives — Deep and Underwater Navigation — and three more that you choose yourself from options including Boat, Wreck, Drift, Night diving and other specialty activities, all with your instructor alongside.
Why Take It
Deeper water. Open Water Diver certifies you to 18 metres; Advanced takes that to 30. In Hurghada that is the difference between the top of a wall and the part of it people talk about afterwards.
Better skills. The course sharpens navigation and buoyancy, and puts you in situations — current, low light, depth — that turn a certified diver into a confident one.
More options. It is also the gateway to the professional track. Rescue Diver, Divemaster and beyond all build on it.
Who Can Enrol
All you need is an Open Water certification. The Open Water course gives you the core competencies the Advanced course builds on.
PADI Junior Open Water Divers aged 12 and over can enrol with restrictions: you are certified to 21 metres, and it upgrades automatically to 30 metres when you turn 15.
Course Structure
There are no quizzes and no exams — this is a course you complete by diving. It runs over two to three days, with up to three dives in a day.
Deep Adventure Dive. You learn how depth affects you and your equipment: colour loss, pressure changes, gas consumption and your own susceptibility to nitrogen narcosis.
Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive. Compass work on land first, then in the water — natural navigation, distance estimation, and finding your way back to the boat.
Three elective dives. Peak Performance Buoyancy, Wreck, Drift, Digital Underwater Photography, Boat Diver and more. Choose with your next trip in mind: if you plan on cold water, take Dry Suit; if you are curious about Nitrox, sample it here before committing to the full specialty.
Equipment
Beyond your normal dive kit, what you need depends on the dives you pick — a compass for the navigation dive, a camera for underwater photography, a light for a night dive. We supply everything on the boat, and your instructor will show you how each piece works before you use it.

Transfer. For hotels inside Hurghada, transfer to and from your hotel is free of charge. For hotels in Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and El Gouna there is a surcharge of €20 per day per car. Rental equipment, where it is not already included, is €15 per day and person.
Each step builds on the one before it. Emergency First Response sits alongside the ladder rather than on it — it is a first aid course, required before Rescue Diver, and open to non-divers as well.
