Emergency First Response gives you the confidence to respond to a medical emergency — not only in the diving world, but in your everyday one, with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.
It is a combination of flexible online self-study and hands-on training with an instructor, and it is open to everyone. You do not need to be a diver, and there are no age limits or prerequisites.
Primary Care (CPR). The life-saving skills: CPR for adults and children, and handling life-threatening emergencies until professional medical help arrives. The goal is simple — sustain the patient long enough for the emergency services to reach them.
Secondary Care (First Aid). Assessing injuries and illnesses, providing first aid that eases pain, and practising bandaging and splinting.
Special skills. Spinal injuries, choking, shock and serious bleeding, plus how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Scuba diving carries risk like any sport — a 2014 Divers Alert Network study put its fatality rate below jogging and swimming, but that is no reason to be unprepared.
Basic CPR and first aid make an enormous difference in the first minutes of an emergency, especially if you are the first person on the scene. And knowing you could handle it takes a weight off every dive you make afterwards.
Expect 6–12 hours in total. The self-study phase runs online and takes roughly 2–4 hours — videos of each technique and what to do in an emergency, on a computer or phone, offline if you use the PADI Training app.
The practical training takes about 4–8 hours at our centre, where you learn and rehearse the eight core skills for helping someone in an emergency.
For hygiene reasons every participant needs their own set of personal barriers — gloves, bandages for practice, and a ventilation barrier. Ask your instructor beforehand and we will sort it out.
EFR is a stepping stone. The first aid and CPR skills you gain here are a formal prerequisite for the PADI Rescue Diver course, and through that for the Divemaster programme.
Many divers take both in the same week: EFR on the first day, Rescue over the days that follow.
