Diving without disturbing marine life or damaging coral is a skill, and it is one worth mastering. This specialty teaches you to calculate the weight you actually need, which is almost always less than you are carrying.
From there you learn to hold neutral buoyancy and trim, to move through the water more efficiently — saving energy and air — and to hover in different positions, which turns out to be the difference between seeing a reef and photographing one.
Why It Matters
Better buoyancy means longer dives on the same tank, less fatigue, and reefs that stay intact behind you.
It is also the fastest way to look like a diver who knows what they are doing. Instructors can spot good buoyancy from thirty metres away.
Good to Know
One day, two dives — the shortest specialty on the list and, for most divers, the most immediately useful. It fits easily alongside a normal day of daily diving.
