Course Structure

The PADI Open Water Diver Course is structured to facilitate learning and skill acquisition at a comfortable pace. It is divided into three main parts:

  1. Knowledge Development: This segment is usually completed through PADI eLearning. It covers scuba diving principles, safety guidelines, and terminology. You can study at your own pace and connect with your instructor whenever you have a question.
  2. Confined Water Skills Practice: In this part of the course, you practice using scuba gear and learn basic scuba skills in a pool or pool-like environment. This includes mini dives to help build confidence before heading into open water.
  3. Open Water Skills Practice: This is the final and most exciting part of the course – the open water dives. They are usually carried out over at least two days, and each dive is designed to help you practice and hone your diving skills while increasing your comfort and confidence in the water.

Open Water Practice

Open water practice is the essence of the PADI Open Water Diver Course. It includes four open water dives, each designed to test your skills and boost your confidence underwater. Some skills are specific to certain dives, while others, known as “dive-flexible skills,” can be performed during any of the four dives.

PADI Open Water Dives 1 and 2

Dives 1 and 2 are primarily about introducing you to open water and establishing comfort underwater. The maximum depth for these dives is 12 meters (40 feet).

Open Water Dive 1:

In your first open water dive, you’ll perform a controlled descent, clear a partially flooded mask, recover and clear your regulator, and get a chance to explore the dive site with your instructor.

Open Water Dive 2:

The second dive introduces more advanced skills. You’ll need to make yourself neutrally buoyant, demonstrate a few specific skills, and get more time to explore the dive site.

PADI Open Water Dives 3 and 4

Dives 3 and 4 increase the maximum depth to 18 meters (60 feet) and add more surface and in-water skills, making them the ideal progression to grow your in-water capabilities.

Open Water Dive 3:

In the third dive, you’ll descend to a maximum of 18 meters and perform specific skills, like inflating your BCD orally to become neutrally buoyant and clearing a fully flooded mask.

Open Water Dive 4:

The fourth dive usually involves any remaining dive-flexible skills. It’s your chance to explore the dive site under the watchful eye of your instructor.
