What is the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course, often referred to as the PADI Advanced Course, is a progression course designed to refine your diving skills and knowledge following the completion of the PADI Open Water Diver certification. This course provides you the opportunity to explore different diving specialties under the watchful eye of a seasoned instructor.

The course comprises five different adventure dives, two of which are mandatory: the Deep Dive and Underwater Navigation. The remaining three dives are elective, chosen from a vast array of PADI specialty courses. The idea is to introduce you to the vast spectrum of diving experiences that you can further pursue through specialty training.

Why Opt for PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

The question that might be swimming in your mind is, why should you opt for the PADI Advanced Course? The answer lies in the host of benefits this course offers.

Diving Deeper into the Ocean

One of the key advantages of this course is that it allows you to dive deeper than the Open Water Diver certification. While your Open Water Diver Certification allows you to explore up to 18m/60ft, the Advanced Open Water Diver course extends this limit to 30m/100ft. This deeper exploration opens up a wider range of dive sites and marine life, enhancing your diving experience.

Enhancing Your Skills

The PADI Advanced Course is a fantastic way to polish your basic diving skills. The course provides you with a deeper understanding of navigation and buoyancy and introduces you to new diving experiences. Whether it’s learning how to manage currents or improving your buoyancy control, this course is all about making you a better and more confident diver.

Expanding Diving Possibilities

The Advanced Open Water Diver Course is your stepping stone to becoming a dive professional. By enhancing your skills and diving possibilities, it prepares you for future diving endeavors. Whether you wish to pursue the Rescue Course, Divemaster, or Instructor certifications, this course sets the stage for further advancement in your diving journey.

Who Can Enroll in the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

The prerequisites for the PADI Advanced Course are quite straightforward. All you need to have is an Open Water Certification. The Open Water Course equips you with the necessary core competencies to move on to the Advanced Course.

Even if you are a PADI Junior Open Water Diver and are at least 12 years old, you can enroll in an Advanced Open Water Diver course, with certain restrictions. After completing the Advanced Course, you will be certified up to 21m/70ft, and will automatically upgrade to 30m/100ft when you turn 15.

Structure of the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course

The PADI Advanced Course is an uncomplicated course to complete as there are no quizzes or exams. The course can be completed over two to three days, with up to three dives being completed in one day. The structure of the course is as follows:

  1. Deep Adventure Dive: This dive trains you to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deep-sea diving. You learn about color changes at depth, pressure changes, and how susceptible you are to nitrogen narcosis.
  2. Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive: This mandatory dive equips you with enhanced navigation skills. You practice your compass navigation skills on land first and then under the water.
  3. Optional Adventure Dives: PADI offers a range of specialty courses to choose from for your optional adventure dives. These include Peak Performance Buoyancy, Boat Diver, Coral Reef Conservation, Digital Underwater Photography, Drift Diver, and more.

How to Choose Your Optional Dives

When deciding on your adventure dives, consider both your immediate environment and your future diving destinations. If you’ll be doing mostly cold water diving, a dry suit course would be beneficial. On the other hand, if you’re interested in Nitrox, but still unsure, you can get a taste of it before committing to a full course. The Advanced Open Water Course is excellent because it focuses on enhancing your diving skills while exploring a world of possibilities.

What Equipment Do You Need?

In addition to your regular dive gear, the additional equipment you will need depends on the dives you choose. From underwater photography equipment to dry suits, dive lights, and more, the course teaches you how to use a variety of dive equipment. For the mandatory navigational dive, you’ll need a compass. Most dive shops will be able to provide any gear you may need.

PADI eLearning Courses

PADI also offers an eLearning option, allowing you to complete the theoretical parts of the course before you arrive for the practical sessions. This web-based training is a convenient way to get a head start on your PADI certification course.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course is a fantastic opportunity to take your diving skills to the next level. It gives you the confidence to explore deeper depths and introduces you to a range of diving specialties. Whether you are a diving enthusiast or planning to become a diving professional, this course is a valuable addition to your diving journey.

Remember, diving is not just about exploring the ocean; it’s about exploring yourself. So, take the plunge, enroll in the PADI Advanced Course, and embark on an underwater adventure like never before. Happy Diving!
