Shaab Sheer

On sea chart you will find this reef with the name Hyndeman reef (this name is not used suburb) and the name Shaab Sheer lead back to Abu Kafan. This names are coming from the fishingman and they are older then the oldest sea charts, so you can forget the sea charts. The reef has a from like a horseshoe and it is more then 1 kilometre long. It offer a perfect berth with three wonderful dive sites closed and also six more which can be reached very easy by a raft. The illustration is showing the east-end from Shaab Sheer where the three ergs are building a channel together with the main reef. Outside you will find an extensive garden with brain corals with an atmosphere like on the moon. In this three ergs there are some uncommon beautiful caves and grotto. The north side of the reef is open to the sea and it can be a little bit rough. The south side is nearly like a lagoon and always good protected. Currents can be from the north-side a little bit stronger. She divide up at the middle of the reef and flow at the east- and west side along. The west side turned to the deep south Safaga channel and the current here is very strong but also in the shallow channel between the three ergs and the eastern reef the current can be sometimes stronger.

You have three possibilities. A drift dive among the northern plateau and the steep slope, diving at the west side starting from the berth or the east side with the brain coral garden. Starting from the berth between the channel around 12 m. Cross the coral garden on the way to the northern reef. The steep slope (30 m) is too far away and it’s not important to dive there, but the plateau is very photogenic and you will see here schools from banner fish, redtooth trigger fish and some mackerel. Come back with enough air to have time to visit the grotto and the small channels at the ergs. The one in the middle is the best.

This dive site will be dived because of the landscape like a moon and not because of the fish life over here. Nevertheless you can see here all kind of trigger fish, redtooth, gigant, orangestripped and yellowmargin trigger fish. Parrot fishes, scribbled leatherjacket and sling-jaw wrasse you will find them in mass. At the northern plateau and the steep slope there are breams, bigeye emperor, mackerels, red and black snapper very often to see. Tuna and barracuda schools are visiting sometimes this place.
